davekillcountysmith Well, I have to add my review here, if for no other reason than to make it two glowing reviews from two purchases. And mine will be unbiased, as well. This is really rather good. Americana-tinged indie. Very well-crafted songs. Thoroughly enjoysble. Favorite track: My Heart Your Beat.

Book Club (The Band) My indie rock band (2005-2009), so including this as a favorite is pretty biased, but i still love the songs, and all the times it makes me think of. Favorite track: My Heart Your Beat.

about

Funny Story, Cassavetes' debut full-length on Atlanta's Headphone Treats label is a dreamy and seductive blend of impulsive rock songs that are as murky as they are innovative and beautiful. Mining a deep, cerebral landscape that touches on influences ranging from Wilco to Neil Young, Modest Mouse to the Pixies, Cassavetes exposes a raw nerve to slow-burning and psychedelic panoramas. Horlick's free-associative lyrics drift over a mix of hazy, American indie rock territory amidst arrangements that are melodious and inspiring in one instance, droning and subliminal the next. The nine songs that make up Funny Story were recorded at The Ether Lounge by Jimmy Ether (the Blake Rainey, Adam McIntyre, The Ether Family Presents...) in Jonesboro, GA.

Throughout the recording, songs like "Everything has an E" and "Moved So Slow" are densely textured, inward journeys that are propelled by intense contemplation. In "These Rocks" the group weaves introspective pop hooks into a web of fading harmonic debris where Horlicks voice functions as just as much of a rhythmic instrument as do the bass, drums and guitar. These elements blend seamlessly into each other, making Funny Story a sultry and understated collection of sonic textures that is indeed greater than the sum of their parts.
